I really liked this book, especially the simplistic way it was written. While reading, I was drawn back to the carefree days of my childhood. The two primary protagonists or main characters of this story are six-year-old children, Robbie and Fristeen, who explore the woods near their houses. They create their own little world, kind of like in Bridge to Terabithia or The Egypt Game. Imagine, two children who had never met before, venturing out into the forest all alone, but finding companionship in each other. Robbie is frightened to go beyond the safety of his backyard until Fristeen helps him overcome his fear. The unique realm they create is fascinating, beautifully described, and its inhabitants are exactly what you'd think a young child might come up with. For example, the fog that sometimes wafts into the woods is called Shivers, a monster made entirely of tendrils of mist who seeks to devour them. Fristeen is sweet, unafraid of danger, and Robbie falls in love with her pretty quickly, a concept that is very grown-up for a six-year-old. Also, some of the concepts this tale explores are very complex for both kids, such as wanting to marry each other and live together in the forest. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loved C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia series or, as I've said before, Bridge to Terabithia (except with a much happier ending) or The Egypt Game. - Kimberly Castro
