The American drivel review Vol #2, Number 4 Spring 2006
The American Drivel Review is a quarterly-published independent journal of literary humor founded in 2004. The editors put forth that humor holds, at best, an unexamined place in the literary world or, at worst, that the place of humor is one of an emaciated, flesh-eating cousin, locked in the attic to subsist solely on the occasional stray bat. Featuring works of humor ranging from the intellectual to the intestinal, ADR aims within its pages to liberate the elements of the comedic impulse from the pedestrian, observational trenches of culture and thereby fashion a true Unified Field Theory of Wit.
We hold these truths to be self-defeating, that all Comedies are not created equal, that most are manacled by their Funnymakers with certain unalienable Punchlines, that among these are Take My Wife Please, I’m a Frayed Knot, and the pursuit of To Get To the Other Side. — That to secure these Punchlines, Laugh-ins are instituted among Comedians, deriving their masturbatory grimaces from the soothing ineptitude of ineloquence, — That whenever this Form of Comedy becomes the soup of the unwashed masses, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new Comedy, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Amusement and Sanitation. Satire, indeed, will dictate that Comedies long established must be overthrown at the lightest whim of the Chuckling Public, and accordingly all experience hath shewn that Complacency beneath the clenched fist of Tyrannical Mediocrity inevitably brings Mankind to the brink of Dave Barry. When a long train of muggings and observations evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such clowning, and to provide new Jokes for their future hilarity. Such is now the necessity that constrains The Editors to throw off the shackles of the Punchline and launch into the hallowed halls of Comedy this missile atomic wrought of absurdity, wit, and It Was Stapled To the Chicken.
